7 Tips to Create the Best Sleep Environment

Getting good, consistent rest is a crucial part of your life. Maintaining healthy sleep habits is necessary for health, happiness, and success! That is why we are passionate about helping you get a good night' sleep every single night.

Believe it or not, where you rest has a significant effect on how you rest. Thus, your bedroom is one of the essential rooms in your house. If you wake up every morning feeling exhausted—even after a reasonable bedtime the night before —it is time for you to find a new angle on sleep. And where you sleep should be a part of your consideration.

Your bedroom might be negatively affecting how your rest, but don't be discouraged. There are many ways you can improve the quality of your sleep, not just the quantity. We have found that one of the best strategies for a good night's rest is making sure that your room is an inviting place.

Here are a few tips to help you create the best sleep environment.

Tip #1: Fresh Air

Have you ever tried to sleep in a hot, stuffy room? You never want to do that again, do you? Make sure you have a good air flow all night long. If the weather is beautiful outside, open a window. Otherwise, consider running a fan, even in the winter. A constant, gentle breeze is exceptionally conducive to a good night's sleep. You may also want to consider keeping green plants in your room to make sure that the oxygen levels are high.

Tip #2: Scent vs. Fragrance

Everyone loves nice smells. But, to be honest, your body usually hates them. If you use a fragrance spray that has a lot of chemicals, don't be surprised if you wake up with itchy eyes and a sore throat every morning. Unnatural fragrances, while they might smell sweet, throw your body off kilter and keep your sleep from being productive. And that means it's time to ditch them!

Instead, use natural scents. Purchase an essential oil diffuser. Keep a bag of rose petals on your bedside stand. Before you go to bed, burn a naturally-scented candle. (make sure to blow it out before you fall asleep!)

Tip #3: Up-to-date Furnishings and Materials

If your house is new, you probably don't have anything to worry about here. But if your home is older, you may want to take a look around your room and see just how old it is. Often, mold can hide in old carpeting, couches, curtains, floorboards, or even window frames. That might be especially true if your house has had water damage at some point. Mold is an invisible but deadly enemy of good sleep (and overall health!). So it might be time to break the piggy bank open and do some remodeling. Your sleep is worth it.

Tip #4: Adjustable Light Levels

We all love light, especially sunlight. And having a bedroom full of windows to let in the natural light is not a bad idea. We recommend it! But sometimes too much sun can affect your sleep—especially on those mornings when you want to sleep later.

Thankfully, there are plenty of solutions for this so that you do not have to ditch the windows. Instead, invest in some thick curtains or shades.) You can even choose to have layered curtains for maximum results. That way, you can let the sunshine stream in during the day, and sit on your bed and watch the sunset in the evenings. But when it is time to sleep, you can pull those curtains shut to adjust the light levels.

Pro tip: curtains can play a big part in your home decor as well. They are both practical and beautiful, so you get to kill two birds with one stone.

Tip #5: Noise Makers

White noise is more of a preference than a necessity. But many people struggle with sound disturbing their sleep. That may be the case, especially if your walls are not terrible soundproof or if your bedroom is on the main floor of the house. So if this is you, consider purchasing a sound machine that plays white noise or nature sounds. It will drown out any outside noise that may disturb your rest, allowing you to sleep all night long. As a side note, sound machines can be an especially helpful tool for young children who have trouble falling asleep.

Tip #6: Clean Space

Let's be honest. We always feel calmer and more relaxed in a fresh, tidy space. It is vital that you set aside a few moments regularly to tidy up your room. It will help you calm down psychologically, contributing to the effectiveness of your sleep. Also, cleaning (i.e., vacuuming/dusting/washing sheets) regularly keeps your room free from dust and other gross things that get into your lungs and make it hard for your body to function. Once again, incorporating living plants into your room will help it feel fresher and more relaxing.

Tip #7: Comfortable Bedding

Last but not least, your mattress and other bedding have a significant impact on how you sleep. You need bedding that is well-made, comfortable, and healthy for your body. It can be hard to find the right balance between soft and firm or light and heavy. But once you do find something perfectly suited to your sleep habits, it is love at first sleep. Thankfully, you don't have to look any further than Nest Bedding for that. Our organic mattresses and other quality bedding ensure that you stay healthy (free from unneeded chemicals) and comfortable all night long. A quality mattress means quality sleep.

Making your room into the best sleep environment possible does take thought. But it is worth it. If you have any questions or would like to look into it further, please contact us. We are all about helping you get the best sleep you can get!
