Waking up hot in your memory foam mattress? Is it making you uncomfortable? Here is why and some remedies.
One of the most common complaints we hear with memory foam mattresses is that they "sleep hot" or rather, that people find they wake up sweating in the mattress. In fact, it is not unusual when showing our customers our foam beds that their first response is "I don't like memory foam."
It is true that most memory foam beds sleep hot. This is due to several factors:
Most foam beds are very dense, which prevents air flow around your body
Most foam beds are covered with "microfiber" fabric or some other blend of polyester, which are all made from plastic
The leading foam mattresses are sold with solid wood box springs which prevent air flow at the bottom of the mattress
To understand why these beds sleep hot, we must first understand where the heat comes from. The heat in your bed comes from your body. At the deepest stage of sleep, your body is quite busy. Here is what is going on:
Blood pressure lowers
Breathing becomes slower and deeper
Muscles relax
Blood supply to muscles increases
Tissue growth and repair begins
Energy is restored
Hormones are released, such as growth hormones, which are essential for growth and development, including muscle development
